A performance camshaft can change the vacuum available to a conventional brake booster. On some modified cars that can contribute to a hard pedal or inconsistent assist. But low vacuum is only one possible cause, so the system needs to be diagnosed before parts are replaced.

First diagnose the brake-assist problem

A hard brake pedal can come from low or unstable manifold vacuum, a failing booster, a vacuum leak, incorrect pedal geometry, master-cylinder sizing or other brake-system issues. The correct solution starts with finding the actual cause.

Brake-assist options for modified cars

Depending on the vehicle and the diagnosis, MPG may retain or improve conventional vacuum assist, use electric vacuum support where appropriate, or engineer a vacuum-independent assist strategy when the complete vehicle combination requires it.

The solution has to suit the whole car

Brake assist cannot be selected from one engine specification alone. Engine vacuum, power-steering configuration, packaging, pedal geometry, master-cylinder sizing, intended use and the rest of the braking system all matter.

Common questions

Can a big cam cause a hard brake pedal?

It can contribute if manifold vacuum is too low or unstable for the conventional booster, but the booster and the rest of the brake system still need to be checked.

Is a bigger vacuum booster always the answer?

No. The correct solution depends on the actual cause, available vacuum, pedal geometry, master-cylinder sizing, packaging and how the vehicle is used.

Can an electric vacuum pump solve the problem?

In some vehicles, yes. It can provide more stable vacuum, but it still has to suit the complete brake system and the intended use of the car.
